Op 15 augustus 1969 probeerden honderdduizenden Amerikaanse jongeren het terrein te bereiken waar dat weekend het meest legendarische popfestival aller tijden zou worden gehouden. Woodstock, een tot dan toe onbeduidend stadje ten noorden van New York, werd tijdens de drie festivaldagen wereldberoemd. Het festival bevestigde de supersterrenstatus van The Who en Janis Joplin, en bracht de doorbraak van Carlos Santana en Crosby, Stills & Nash. Maar de beelden die de wereld overgingen waren toch vooral van die duizenden jongeren die waarmaakten wat de festivalposter beloofde: 3 days of Peace and Music. Ze dronken, blowden, dansten en vierden feest op een volstrekt harmonieuze manier zonder incidenten.

Michael Lang was de veroorzaker van dit alles. Hij had het idee om een festival te organiseren bedacht en met drie anderen Woodstock Ventures opgericht. Lang bleek de juiste man op de juiste plek om dit megalomane project te organiseren: hij deed handig zaken met managers van de supergroepen die hij wilde contracteren, overtuigde bezorgde buurtbewoners van de noodzaak van het festival, wist een balans te vinden om alle belangengroepen tevreden te stellen en bedacht hoe je meer dan tweehonderdduizend jongeren kunt laten kamperen op een voormalig weiland.

Veertig jaar na dato vertelt Michael Lang zijn verhaal, samen met vele betrokkenen uit die tijd. Van de ideefase, de financiering en de werkelijke voorbereidingen, tot het invliegen van artiesten, de lsd die flink rondging en de financiële kater na het festival, alles komt aan bod.

Michael Lang werd vooral bekend als medeoprichter van het Woodstock Music & Art festival in 1969. Lang heeft al menig evenement georganiseerd, waaronder het concert bij de val van de Berlijnse muur in 1989, Woodstock ’94 en Woodstock ’99.

Holly George-Warren is al vaak in de prijzen gevallen met boeken als Grateful Dead 365 en Public Cowboy No.1. Ook werkte ze als redacteur voor The Rolling Stone Encyclopedia of Rock & Roll.
